Urea Formaldehyde Resins are thermosetting polymers produced through polycondensation of urea and formaldehyde.
The reaction between formaldehyde and urea produces derivatives (mono-di-, tri-methylol urea) which include different numbers of methylol groups with formaldehyde binding to amine groups in urea. Methylols which can be dissolved in water are cross bound over methylene or ether bridges in acidic environment and at high temperatures (105 – 210°C) producing urea-formaldehyde resin.
Having an extensive area of use in wood-based panel production (MDF, particleboard, plywood, laminated panel, OSB) and furniture industry, urea-formaldehyde resins are among the most popular resins with high reactivity and low cost features. They are particularly preferred in indoor applications since they have lower water resistance compared to melamine and phenol resins.
